For what it's worth Ray.  Joyce is another branch of the Lewis family who is decended from our parents' (Bill Lewis and Tina Lewis) Scottish maternal line.  Our Grandmother Agnes Windram Lewis (nee Fraser) along with her two sisters were Herring Lassies from Eyemouth Scotland who 'followed the herring' down the east coast each year working as a team of three gutting and barrelling the fish as the fleet landed whilst following the migration south.  Have you ever read about the great fishing disaster of 1881?  About 123 men were lost in a ferocious storm having braved the elements to go to sea.  The vast majority were from Eyemouth where our Grandmother was born and where she lived before meeting our Grandad Jack who was a professional soldier.  Grandad was a lancer of the line in the 16th (The Queens) Lancers during the First and Second Boer Wars of 1901 and 1902.  He had been demobbed but had re-enlisted in the Lincolnshire Yeomanry during the First World War.  He was aboard the SS Mercian that was taking troops and horses to Egypt when it was sunk by a German submarine.  Aunt Nell once told me that he had told her that the horses were going mad below decks and he was below in a sea of blood trying to calm them (he had a reputation of being a good horse man).  It was during WW1 that Grandad sent the photograph of him with his donkeys 'to Robertina from Dada x' which I think must have been your Mum.  By the way, I realise this message is just another that does  rounds and I hope I won't offend you by passing it on - but who knows?
