Belize - Government Seed Bank for the future,.
Where is the Government seed bank in Belize?
Growers are lamenting the loss of native seeds, in particular corn seeds, which have evolved over 13,000 years here. Imports of seeds have replaced them. However, HERITAGE SEEDS or native varieties have evolved to deal with droughts, floods, storms, diseases and pests. They should not be allowed to be lost. If the Government of Belize does not have a preservation food bank of seeds native to our portion of the Americas, then they should surely think about it fast. We are losing about 15 varieties of corn seeds locally at a rapid pace.
