CLARISSA FALLS IN WESTERN BELIZE, A SWIMMING SPOT FOR TRAVELERS AND LUNCH BREAK AT THE RESTAURANT

The white line of breaking water in the background is Clarissa Falls on a Sunday afternoon swimming expedition by some tourists of ours at Falconview Backpackers Adventure Hostel in Hillview, Santa Elena Town, Cayo District, Belize, Central America. This is a low falls and rock barrier extending from one side of the river to the other and was always a portage for the last 11,000 years for the different Maya Empire kingdoms that lived here during that time. It's a great swimming spot out Western Belize Recreational Area and for us is the lunch stop, between the two ruins of Xununtanich and Cahel Pech. This photo was taken Sunday, January 4, 2008 and the dug out tree shows the force of the river in flood during the now well known October floods of 2008.

I was a guest at the Clarissa Falls Resort that day (Jan. 4., '09). I chose not to swim until I learned the new patterns of water flow over the falls, which were rearranged by the floods in October.
