CAYO DISTRICT BOOMING, SEEMS TO BE - BUT WHERE DO THEY GET 18 % UNEMPLOYMENT RATE.

WESTERN BELIZE, CAYO DISTRICT ECONOMY SEEMS TO BE BOOMING.  AT LEAST IF NOT BOOMING, IT IS MOVING STEADILY ALONG.  WHEN ONE READS THE UNEMPLOYMENT STATISTICS FROM THE AMANDALA EDITORIAL ON SUNDAY SEPT.2, 2012, WHICH SAYS 18.2 % OF THE PEOPLE ARE UNEMPLOYED IN THE CAYO DISTRICT. THE LARGEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN THE NATION OF BELIZE. THIS RATE HAS TRIPLED IN THREE YEARS.
ONE WONDERS HOW THIS CAN BE? THE STREETS ON A SATURDAY ARE JAM PACKED WITH PEOPLE AND CARS, ON THE SAN IGNACIO SIDE YOU TAKE AN HOUR, JUST TO WIND YOUR WAY THROUGH THE SMALL TOWN STREETS, WHICH KEEP CHANGING ONE WAY DESIGNATIONS.  ( the streets were designed for a mule train long ago )  SANTA ELENA TOWN, MY TOWN IS STEADILY GROWING EASTWARD ALONG THE HIGHWAY.  NEW SHOPPING STORES ARE SPRINGING UP, ONE AFTER THE OTHER.  NEARLY ALWAYS THERE IS AT LEAST ONE TWO NEW ONES UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THERE ARE FEW IF ANY, PARKING SPACES.

CAYO REPORTEDLY HAS 6,500 UNEMPLOYED.  I WONDER WHAT THEY MEAN?  HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO FIND AN ELECTRICIAN, A TILE LAYER, OR CONCRETE HANDYMAN?  IMPOSSIBLE!  IT MUST BE NEW IMMIGRANTS MOVING IN, COMPETING FOR THE JOBS?  I TAKE A YEAR OR TWO, TO TRAIN A YOUNG MAN WITH LIMITED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE AND THEN ALONG COMES SOME NEW FOREIGN HOTEL BUILDER AND STEALS THEM, TO BUILD THEM A RESORT SOMEPLACE IN THE MOUNTAINS. THEN, I HAVE TO START TRAINING A NEW ONE.
