Plastic bag banning and styrofoam containers debate, in BELIZE continues.

Plastic bag debate and styrofoam containers for food, as garbage around the country, particularly on rivers and beaches.

it has happened in other latin environments - mexico city for instance, made either a ban of free bags (purchased only, to discourage) or outright ban, cannot remember which, quite recently i believe in last 12 mos.
there are other cases too. it COULD be done, and if the $ and muscle of TOURISM would sing this song, ie let's really get MORE eco, not that we aren't to great extent.. you get the drift. tourism and their ministry and their $invested community, have great strength. great power, and they know how to flex that muscle, (WAY more effectively than the agric. community). so , it certainly IS and can be possible here in belize. absolutely. beth

Banning plastic bags in a democratic referendum is a tough sell to the bag generation. To be positive, school children grasp the concept well if a parrot and his buddies screech the pitch to voting parents.John

yes, banning plastic bags would be good. or make them paid at markets, etc, to have folks think about them. would put some teeth into our claim as eco-destination.
