ILLEGAL ENTRY / MINING
A Police Constable presently attached to
the Special Patrol Unit reported that about 8:00am on 10th August, 2012
whilst conducting foot patrol in the Ciebo Chico Area in Chiquibul
National Park along with members of the BDF and members of Friends for
Conservation Development (FCD) where they visited a Creek some 1.5
Kilometers downstream in Belizean Territory where they found two male
person of Hispanic Descent in the water with some plastic basins in
their hands. They were asked who they were and what were they doing in
the area. They both said that they were from Guatemala and that they
were digging for gold. They were asked for their workers permit and
other documentation to be in Belize to which they could not produce.
They were informed of the offence committed and the reason of their
arrest. They were identified as Santiago Chococ, 19yrs, unemployed
Guatemalan of Naranjon Dolores Peten Guatemala and Chrisanto Augustine
Chococ, 45yrs, unemployed Guatemalan of Naranjon Dolores Peten
Guatemala. Both men were escorted to the San Ignacio Police Station
pending Charges of Illegal entry and Illegal Mining.
BELIZEANS WHO CLAIM THEY HAVE NO JOBS, ARE NOT GETTING A LICENSE AND GOING TO PAN GOLD IN THE SOUTHERN INTERIOR MOUNTAINS. THE GOLD RUSH IS ON AND OVER 300 GUATEMALAN ILLEGAL MINERS AND FAMILIES ARE REPUTED TO BE THERE.
